BOOK BINDING BASICS

Who: Book binders were experts at binding books together with a thread and a cover.

What: A typical book binders materials would consist of a linen thread, a cover, folded paper, a flattening press, a lying press, and finishing tools.

Where: The book binder we studied, Lupus AF, lived and worked on N 2nd street, located between Chestnut & Pine.

When: Did you know that paper and the beginning of book binding originated in China? Book binding through this method began in the 16th century, until 1950 when mass production started to develop.

Why: Most individual book binders bound blank pages and sturdy covers together. People would use these to keep various individual records. Companies of book binding on the other hand would put together varieties of literature and text.

How: First, the book binder would fold the paper used to the desirable size. Second, it would be moved to the flattening press, which flattens the folded paper. Third, the paper is moved to the lying pressused for trimming, cutting, and some pasting when needed. This removes the rough edges of the book, and conforms the paper. Fourth, finishing tools are used to indent and create designs on the cover. These look like modern pizza cutters and finish the book binding process.
